#FatblasterFriday | 5 favorite ab exercises

Hip, hip, hooray; it’s finally Friday!

Today, I’m sharing with you my 5 favorite ab exercises, because , hey, everybody loves to work their core!

 Fitknitchick’s 5 Favorite Ab Exercises

favorite ab exercises

Designed to require no equipment (although a yoga mat is always nicer for core work than the floor and adding a single dumbbell to the workout will make it a bit more challenging…), there’s really no excuse not to do this workout with me!

Rather than count reps (I get tired of counting reps, don’t you?), today we’ll be timing our workout.

Perform each exercise for 30s before immediately moving on to the next. Make sure to watch the inset videos for exercise progressions and modifications. And if you have an extra 5 minutes, repeat the circuit for a 10 minute burn.

Feel free to combine this workout with one of my other real time #FatblasterFriday videos. Arms, legs, whole body; it’s up to you!

  1. I’ve never heard of surrender squats before! Love it. Must try them 🙂

    Happy Friday!

    • Kierston, you could make them even more challenging by holding a barbell across your shoulder blades… just an idea!

  2. Tamara I’ve been searching for an ab workout! I’ve tried several on youtube but haven’t found one I see myself sticking with consistently. I’m trying yours next 🙂

    • Let me know what you think Jill! I have a couple of other ones on my channel as well!

  3. Thanks, pinned! Have a great weekend!

  4. I took a new class the Y is offering….Jillian Michael’s Shred….and we just did surrender squats….and feel the burn oh my!

    • Kathy, interesting that your Y is doing Shred. Does the class watch the video or do you have an instructor teaching the workout? (I’d rather an instructor; can’t stand how Jillian yells at me!)

  5. Oh – I think the surrender squats and the reverse bridge squats need to become one of my daily moves!!
    Thanks for the great workout!!!
    Enjoy FitBloggin’!!

    • You’re welcome! Have you decided what you’re going to be doing for your 44th birthday???
      Want a birthday workout? 😉

      • First – 43 of those surrender squats (with each leg leading!) were insane!!!
I’m planning to keep up my tradition of running my age so 44 miles to celebrate.
But, I would love a birthday workout for later in the week!!! (plenty of time – Sept. 16)

        • It’s a plan! Remind me of your birthday a week in advance? (although I did put it on my calendar…)

  6. I love your videos! I have not seen the reverse bridges & with this 55 yr old butt going way south, a good way to work multiple things! 🙂 Hope you are having a blast at FitBloggin!

    • Hi Jody! Thanks so much for your kind words. I really love the video medium and learned lots this weekend about making it even better!

  7. These are great! It’s been a while since I’ve done surrender squats but I did them the other day and forgot what little buggers they are!! I mean, I guess that’s a good thing 🙂

    • Hi Christine! Surrender squats are deceptive, aren’t they? They start off so easy, but pretty soon you realize that you’re using nearly every muscle in your entire body!
      Happy Belated Birthday, my friend!

  8. Great video! I am looking into creating some exercise videos for my blog, here’s hoping they are as fluid as yours!
I also prefer to time my workouts rather than count reps 🙂

  9. Definitely needed this! I’m so lazy on the ab stuff and always leave if for last which means, I don’t usually do it. thanks for the list! It was nice meeting you for a brief moment at Fitbloggin this weekend! (I was the one handing out Mizuno bags!) Hope you had a fun weekend!

    • Hi Erica! Thanks so much for the Mizuno bag and goodies inside; my kids gobbled them down before breakfast this morning (shh, don’t tell, I’m not usually such a pushover parent!).
Great meeting you this past weekend in Portland. It really was a log of fun, wasn’t it?

  10. Off topic, but: really nice definition on the triceps there, Tamara! 🙂

    • Thanks so much! Given my current Achilles injury, it’s safe to say that I’ll be focusing on upper body work for a few weeks!

  11. Awesome ab workout Tamara. Its always good to get more of a variety in my workouts when i hit a slump. Gets me back on focus again.

    • Variety really is key, isn’t it?
Thanks for the visit and comment. Watch for a new workout video next week!

  12. Surrender squats are new to me as well. Cant wait to try this!

  13. Good afternoon….Is there a modification for the surrender exercise. Having had back and knee surgery, this one is a tough one on me Thank you.

    • Shirley, you can always sub in a plank for any moving core exercise. In this case, although I might suggest a body weight squat, given your surgeries, static holds would probably be better!

  1. […]  I got the move from Tamara at Fitknitchick.  She demoed a workout that included 5 favorite ab moves so I used one of the moves – the Surrender Squat. […]
