Functional, flirty and feminine fit gear | A Tough Girl Skirt review

I work in a gym. That means that 6 days out of 7, I can be found wearing tights. Basic, boring, black tights. Functional, but not very fun.

While I love my job, I AM envious of friends who get to dress up for work. You know, put on a skirt. Look a little more feminine. Have a bit of fun with clothes.

Yes, I know you can buy workout skirts. But way up here in the north, we need something on our legs to keep us warm from September through May.

Imagine my delight when I discovered the Tough Girl Skirt by SkirtSports. Full length, boot cut workout tights topped by a fun, flirty and feminine skirt! And not just in black, but in many colourful solids and prints too!

I immediately ordered the black (baby fashion steps here…).

The first three days after they arrived, I wore nothing else. Around the house. Out for groceries and to the dentist. A quick trip to the mall. Hiking with the family on a cold, windy day.

And of course, to the gym. (I gotta tell you, the girls were all jealous!)

Tough Girl Skirt review

While perfectly functional for weight work, I found the fabric to be too warm for cardiovascular training. Thankfully Skirt Sports also makes a capri length version of these tights (I’ve already added the Lotta Breeze Capris to my Sweet Relish workout wear list!)

I love the fit. Clingy around the thigh and widening to a moderate boot cut at the toe, the silhouette is flattering and fun.

I love the skirt. Just the right length to cover up your booty when running errands after you leave the gym.

I love the pockets. One on each leg, hidden by the skirt. Perfect for holding your iPod. There’s even a ‘Sonic Music Port’ to thread your headphones through. Brilliant!

I love the fabric. Sleek, only slightly shiny and with enough weight that the skirt doesn’t constantly ride up or cling to the tights.

I love that they keep my legs warm when the weather isn’t.

The only thing I’d change is the length. I’m 5’7″ tall, with fairly long legs, and my medium Tough Girls are still about an inch and a half too long. Thank goodness I know a fabulous tailor!

Wanna see them in another colour? Just so happens that Carla (MizFit) is also reviewing the Tough Girl today  (and yes, we did plan this, just like you used to call your girlfriends up before going out just to ask them what they were wearing…). Click on over and see what she has to say!

Have you ever worn a skirt or dress to work out in?

Which colour or pattern would YOU order?

    • But you’d look wonderful in the capri length…. (what can I review that would appeal to my male readers?)

  3. I have tried two different brands of skirts to work out in, but neither had full length tights underneath. They were more for summer I guess. I really wanted to like them. I liked the idea of them – a way to cover my bum so that when I speed walk the world can’t see it do it’s thing, (which I imagine must be some horrid figure eight pattern.) But I found that, because I’m so curvy, the skirt kept riding up to my natural waist and the tights underneath then cleaved me in half. As far as color goes, I only wear black tights. The colored ones are just not as forgiving, and I can always see my cellulite through them. I guess black shadows the divets. 🙂

    • Gaye, I hear you about ‘the rear view’. That’s the reason why I’ve never tried wearing the skirts with compression shorts underneath; the back of my legs are not my favourite body part…

The Tough Girl skirt never rode up on me. Perhaps because the fabric is very ‘slippery’ and the skirt has a lot of ‘flounce’ to it. You might like it!

  4. ONCE YOU TALKED THE LENGTH, i AM GUESSING THEY DON’T HAVE PETITE & A 5’1″ PERSON WOULD NOT FIND THE RIGHT LENGTH. 😉 OK – hit caps by mistake & not retyping! 😉

Very cute though!!! No, no cardio for me & I don’t even do cardio in capris due to my hard core cardio & sweat like crazy so I wear short tights. VERY cite for out & about or in & stretching or home stuff !!!

    • Definitely no cardio in these ones. They are quite warm, which is why I wanted to try them!
The capris are made of a mesh fabric, so maybe more breathability?

  5. PS: LOVED THE PICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Oh sweet. I definitely want some of these. They are perfect for gym and running and errands around town. Too cute!

    • Perfect for everyday wear! (Although I was dissuaded by hubby for wearing them out to a family dinner at a local mid-level seafood restaurant…)

  7. Love these…especially useful when I want to run some errands after my workout..

  8. I average about one day a week in pants with a zipper! You made me laugh with your baby fashion steps from black to black. And I was going to be envious at your long legs (never had that issue) but then I remembered I live where we can wear skirts practically all year! Fun review!

    • Well, after seeing Carla’s “brave” choice of a print, I’m thinking that I need to take a bigger fashion step next time…

  9. OMG I want these! They’re not what I had pictured at all in my mind!

  10. I have been curious about these but I think they would be too warm. I work from home and love to wear workout clothes all day It helps keep me mnotivated to do mini workouts and stretches throughout the day. Will look to see if they do capris in the spring.

And I have a running skirt which I LOVE

    • Stephanie, the Tough Girl is quite warm. So glad I didn’t ask for the Arctic Queen! Doesn’t get quite that cold in Vancouver 🙂

The capris look fabulous. I would definitely wear them to train and teach in!

  11. I’ve often wondered if I would actually wear one of these or not. I agree working from home I generally don’t spend a whole lot of time getting dressed up, so it’s nice to feel like a girl!

    • Exactly, Amanda! I wear mine at home. Great for around the house and out and about errands. I would wear them everyday if I could!

  12. I just want some to wear (who knows if I would ever work-out in them!!) everywhere!!!

  13. Super cute! I know exactly how you feel. I live in black pants and workout gear daily. Sometimes a week has gone by and I realize that I haven’t worn any “regular” clothes. To make up for it, I try to dress extra fancy when I go to cool places like the grocery store. 🙂

    • Ha, ha! Yes, I put on my heels and jeans when I head out to Costco and Home Depot! Even a little eye liner and lipstick. Makes me feel so much more grown up!

  14. I was hooked until you said they were too long. I’m only 5’5″ so for me it would be a problem if they’re too long. Bummer, as it’s awfully cute on you.

  15. So cute AND practical! Am slightly crushed they are sold out of my size in the grey … And yes, I do wear skirts for sports of all kinds and love ’em. I seem to have a hard time finding shorts whose fit I can even tolerate not to mention like, and we have summer temps up to 105-110F, so I have a three or four month stretch of the year when pants are not an option!

  16. Nice guns sista! The skirt is cool too – I want to sport one of those at my gym.
