September is the ‘new January’: The Fresh Start Fitness Challenge

Forget about January, for many of us, September is the month to get back on track with our health and fitness goals. The kids are back in school, summer barbecues and parties are a thing of the past, and New Year’s Eve parties (and little black dresses!) are only a few months away!

It’s the perfect time to commit to getting to the gym more regularly and making healthier choices in the kitchen.

Welcome to the Fresh Start Fitness Challenge!

Each Sunday during the month of September, I’ll be posting a series of fitness and health challenges to be completed over the following week. Join in, comment on your successes (and near successes!) and be entered to win an 8-Week Fitness Coaching Package ($150 value), courtesy of me, fitknitchick.

Every comment you leave gives you one entry in the draw (I’ll give you specific directions about WHERE to comment as we get closer to the start date). The winning comment will be chosen randomly at the end of the month and the winner contacted via e-mail to arrange initiation of our coaching relationship.

What does the Fitness Coaching Package consist of?

  • An initial interview to discuss your personal fitness and nutritional goals (preferably via Skype, but possibly telephone or in person if the winner is local)
  • Two workout plans; one to start and a second, follow up plan, 30 days later
  • Menu tips and suggestions (I’m not a registered dietician, so meal planning is outside of my scope of practice)
  • Weekly check-ins via email
  • Menu and workout tracking tools to help with adherence and consistency

  2. Sounds fun! I definitely need to hit the reset button. My summertime nutrition is getting out of control! I’m doing okay on the workout front though – training for a fall half-marathon. (Assuming this twinge in my knee doesn’t keep bothering me.)

    • Zarah, happy to have you join in! Knee twinges can be tricky (I’ve had those too…). Rest, ice and ibuprofen have always helped mine!

  4. Nooooo, summer cannot be over. Waaa haaa. I always like having my schoolteacher hubster home for summer. Boo hoo when he has to go back to the classroom. We have one more week – before he returns AND before we see our daughter play in a CA tourney with her team. So my challenge will be to not be sad to say so long to summer.

  5. Oh I am so in on this….my workouts have pretty much stopped this summer because of the kids swimming schedules. I have tried to keep on track with the food though. Really looking forward to seeing what you throw at us!

  6. I focused last January on starting a fitness revolution (even if I was the only willing participant in my household). I dropped 15 lbs and worked out with a trainer twice a week. This September I hope to kickstart phase 2 of this overhaul and lose another 15 lbs while becoming the best runner I can be! I need serious help, though, staying on track.

    • Melinda, perhaps this group challenge is just what you need to stay accountable! I’d love it if you’d join in!

  9. Great idea, Tamara. Today was my oldest’s first day back at school, which meant I needed to adjust back to my school year hours. Which meant I had to get up at 5:45 am to work out, rather than 7:30 to 8:00 like I’ve been doing all summer. Yikes.

    • Good for you for DOING it! So many (me included) would hit the snooze button. I think I better get started on gradual re-entry; for me and the kids!

  11. I’m with you, Tamara! My biggest challenge right now is finding the motivation to lose the “last 10 lbs.” Have come far, feeling great, but would like to see if I can take it all the way . . . . this will surely inspire me. Thanks for organizing!

  12. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs with keeping fit and managing my weight over the last ten years or so. I managed to go from around 210 to 140 (over the course of several years) and have run three full marathons and 9 half marathons in the last four years. I had a reality check this past Friday when I saw my family doctor and saw the scale read 185. I am currently training for my fourth marathon in November and have been working hard to get runs in during the week and do my long runs on the weekends, but know that there are changes I can make in my diet and by incorporating other fitness so that I can be happier with myself. I can boast all I want about my accomplishments but when I can’t fit into my favorite pair of jeans I feel nothing but disappointment in myself for the weight I’ve gained.
