GNC’s Whey Iso Burst All Natural: move over vanilla, chocolate’s my new favorite!

A few weeks ago I reviewed GNC’s Women’s Ultra Mega Vitapak. Remember? There was subsequent discussion of the effect multivitamins can have on urine color. It’s coming back to you now, isn’t it?

Along with a month’s worth of supplements, GNC was also generous enough to send me a giant tub of their Pro Performance Whey Iso Burst All Natural protein powder to try. I’ve written about my love of whey before; I like how it fills me up and gives me an extra serving or two of protein to help with muscle building and fat loss. It’s also incredibly easy to ingest in the few minutes I typically have between workouts, classes and clients.

When it comes to whey, I’m usually a ‘vanilla’ girl. Vanilla goes with everything I can imagine mixing it with; spinach, kale, bananas, coffee, almond butter, berries and applesauce (if you have some other suggestions, I’d love to hear them!). However, when offered the chance to try something different, I opted for the chocolate. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?

And what a chocolate it was! Stick your nose down close to the jar and inhale deeply. Isn’t that incredible?

I’ve blended it in green shakes (when I Tweeted this photo, friends were amazed at how green it was, even with the chocolate whey powder; I like a lot of spinach in my shakes!);

I’ve mixed it with coffee, peanut butter and banana (a great ‘between classes’ energy booster).

I’ve baked oatmeal protein bars with it;

And most recently, substituted it for the vanilla powder in this recipe (I cut the honey back to 1 1/4 cups, perhaps even a little less next time);

You’ve got to try these; my 9-year old swears that they taste like Tootsie Rolls. But they’re good for her (don’t tell!).

Nutritionally, each scoop of powder has 19 g of high quality whey protein, 0.5 grams of both fats and carbs (this is great for my new nutrition plan) and clocks in at a paltry 85 calories.

It’s sweetened with Stevia, an all-nature, clean eating-approved sweetener. This is probably the reason that I’m not overly fond of it when mixed with just water or unsweetened almond milk. I always find Stevia-sweetened powders to have a bitter-ish aftertaste, which is why my preferred way to consume them is with fruit and spinach.

My tub is almost gone, so I popped into my local GNC store today to replenish. As luck would have it, they were having a sale; buy one tub, get the 2nd for half price. With my Gold card discount (20% every day!), it was almost like getting the 2nd tub for free. Win, win, win! I decided to try the vanilla to see if it’s as wonderful tasting as the chocolate. I’ll let you know!

Do you include whey protein powder in your diet?

What’s your favorite flavor?
